Which animals are a good match?
In Korea, friends and couples still compare zodiac animals for fun. The 12 animals are the same as the Chinese zodiac, and the traditional rules say some pairs are natural allies while others sit opposite and clash. Pick two animals to see how they get along as friends, partners and coworkers.
Not sure of your animal? Find it by birthday. It changes at Ipchun, around February 4.

How Korean zodiac compatibility works
Your zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your birth year, one character out of the eight in a Korean birth chart. The animal changes at Ipchun, the start of spring around February 4, not on January 1 or at Lunar New Year. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the previous year's animal.
How we score a match
- Natural pairs and trios
Six pairs of animals are natural partners (yukhap, +2), and four trios are allies (samhap, +1.5). Animals of the same season (banghap) and two of the same animal add +0.5.
- Opposites and uneasy pairs
Animals directly opposite on the wheel clash (chung, −2), and a few pairs tend to misread each other (wonjin, −1.5). Punishment, break and harm patterns take off a little more.
- Five elements
When no strong pattern applies, we look at whether the two animals' elements feed (+0.5) or check (−0.5) each other.
- Five levels
Every pair starts from 3 points, and the total is rounded to a level from 1 to 5. Each pair page shows its own math under “Your energies.”
What each level means
- Perfect match · 5/5
You recognize each other right away. Just don't take it for granted: say thank you often.
- Solid match · 4/5
You give each other real strength. Set a shared goal and you will shine even more.
- Easygoing match · 3/5
A comfortable match without major clashes. Keep showing interest and you will grow closer.
- Worth the effort · 2/5
This gets better the more you both put in. Small promises and honest talks protect it.
- Opposites · 1/5
You are close to opposites, which also means you have the most to learn from each other. Start by accepting the differences.
Animals repeat every 12 years, so two people with the same pair of animals can be many different ages apart. Each pair page lists the most common gaps.
Zodiac animals only tell part of the story
Two people of the same animal can be very different. Your Korean birth chart adds the month, day and hour you were born, which say much more about your personality, and birthday compatibility compares two full charts.
Zodiac compatibility follows traditional Korean rules about the 12 animals and looks only at birth years, so treat it as a fun starting point. Real relationships depend on the people in them.
