What is Saju?

Saju (사주, “four pillars”) is the Korean name for the East Asian system also known as Four Pillars of Destiny, or BaZi in Chinese. Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of two characters: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. That makes eight characters in all, which is why Koreans also call it “the eight characters” (팔자, palja).

Each character belongs to one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. A Saju reading looks at how they balance and how they relate to the top character of your day pillar, called your day master, which stands for you.

Four pillars, four generations

In Korean tradition each pillar also stands for part of your family: the year pillar for your grandparents and roots, the month pillar for your parents, the day pillar for you and your partner, and the hour pillar for your children and later life. Our logo shows the same idea: four figures, with you in the middle.
