Dreaming of a tiger

Lucky in Korea
What it usually means in the US

Western readings often see a tiger as danger, fear or anger, or as your own strength and confidence.

What it means in Korea

Tigers hold a special place in Korean culture as guardians of the mountains, so a tiger dream is mostly read as good news. A tiger stands for authority and a powerful person who will help you. Even a frightening tiger dream is not necessarily bad in the traditional reading.

The Korean story behind tiger dreams

Korea is a land of mountains, and real tigers once roamed them. People feared the animal but also honored it as a guardian. In temple shrines to the mountain spirit, called sansin (산신), a tiger usually sits beside the white-haired spirit as his companion. Folk paintings known as minhwa (민화) often pair a tiger with a magpie, and the tiger in them can look funny or even friendly. Families once hung tiger pictures at the new year to keep bad luck away. Many old Korean folktales open with a phrase about the days when tigers smoked pipes. When Seoul hosted the 1988 Olympics, a tiger cub named Hodori served as the mascot.

Could a tiger dream be a taemong?

A tiger taemong is said to announce a brave child who will become a leader.

Tiger dream: what people do next

Someone who dreams of a tiger might take it as encouragement to ask a mentor or boss for support. Workers sometimes see it as a good moment to push for a new role. A tiger dream during pregnancy is often shared with grandparents, who love to guess what kind of child it promises. Buying a lottery ticket just for fun is also common.
