Five of Pentacles
This card reflects hard times or a feeling of being left out in the cold. Yet a door offering help stands open much closer than it seems.
You are slowly finding your way out of hardship and beginning to receive real support.
The card's advice: Never feel ashamed to ask for help.
Five of Pentacles: reading the picture
Snow is coming down hard. A man in a satgat, a cone-shaped bamboo hat, leans on a long wooden staff, a heavy bundle on his back and his coat hanging in tatters. Beside him a smaller figure, wrapped head to toe in a red shawl, walks with hands clasped and head bowed. Right above them, set in the stone wall, a tall window glows warm yellow with five coins in its panes. Neither of them looks up. That is the ache of the picture: shelter is a few steps away, but cold bodies watch only the path. Snowy rooftops and lit windows behind show they're in the middle of town, not lost in the wild.
Five of Pentacles in love, work and money
- Love and relationships
You may feel abandoned and alone, or the two of you may be facing a hard season together. The tougher it gets, the more you should lean on each other and accept warmth from those around you.
- Work and study
Your job may feel uncertain, or the reward may seem unfair for the effort you put in. Instead of enduring alone, ask a career counselor or a senior colleague, and a door may open surprisingly close by.
- Money
Spending is outpacing income, and your heart may feel as cold as the weather. Looking into public assistance or help from people nearby is nothing to be ashamed of, so calmly trim expenses first.
The church pantry two blocks from home
Laid off after the holiday rush, a 39-year-old warehouse worker walked past the food pantry in a nearby church basement three times without going in. He was afraid of running into a neighbor. When he drew the Five of Pentacles, he recognized himself in the two figures passing under the glowing window without lifting their heads. The card doesn't blame his situation; it points at where his eyes are. The next Saturday he went with his sister, and he also called the number on the county job center flyer.
Questions to ask yourself after drawing Five of Pentacles
- What lit window is close by that I haven't looked up long enough to notice?
- Is it my circumstances keeping me from asking for help, or worry about how I'll look?
- How much of this am I sharing with the person walking beside me in the snow?
Five of Pentacles as a yes or no
No Your circumstances and spirit are worn out right now, so recovering comes before any big decision.
Easy to confuse with Five of Cups
Both are fives about loss. The Five of Cups shows a cloaked figure staring at spilled cups, grieving what's already gone; the pain is emotional and looks backward. The Five of Pentacles puts two people in the cold right now. What's missing is money, warmth, or safety, and the problem is getting through tonight. Heartache points to Cups. Material hardship points to Pentacles.
A common misreading of Five of Pentacles
Some people see this card and fear it predicts bankruptcy. Tarot doesn't lock in a future like that. The card describes a present sense of lack and isolation, plus help nearby that isn't being seen. If money worry is heavy, a real counselor or assistance office is a sensible first stop.
Symbols in Five of Pentacles

How we drew Five of Pentacles
- Kept from the 1909 card
the snowy night, the lit window with five coins, the two poor figures passing beneath
- What we changed
A walking staff replaces the crutches, and the figure wears a satgat (a wide bamboo hat).
