Seven of Cups

#Illusion#Many options#Indecision
Upright

Seven cups float on clouds, each holding a tempting vision. Separate what merely looks dazzling from what is actually possible before you reach for anything.

Reversed

A choice that once felt confusing is finally starting to come into clearer focus for you.

The card's advice: Pick one option and let the rest go.

Seven of Cups: reading the picture

You stand behind someone with long black hair and a red ribbon, looking up at seven cups floating on clouds. The top row holds a turreted castle, a heap of jewels spilling pearls, a laurel wreath and a coiled green snake. Below come a red dragon, a shape hidden under a white veil, and a woman's face crowned with flowers. Security, riches, honor, temptation, fear and something unknown all share one sky. The viewer, in hanbok, stays on the ground. That distance between an earthbound person and airborne cups is the point. And because we see from behind, we end up choosing right alongside them.

Seven of Cups in love, work and money

  • Love and relationships

Several people may all seem appealing, or you might picture someone as better than they really are. The bigger the thrill, the more calmly you should watch how they actually behave.

  • Work and study

With so many ideas and ambitions, you may struggle to start any of them. Choose just one thing you can do right now and put it on your calendar.

  • Money

Stories of easy money or glittering things can easily sway you. The more excited you feel, the more important it is to check your real needs and your actual funds in numbers.

When it comes up

Five cities open on a rental app

A 22-year-old college senior with a remote job offer had apartment listings open in five cities: Denver, Portland, Chicago, Raleigh and a beach town she'd visited once. Each tab came with a whole imagined life. At 1 a.m. she drew the Seven of Cups and recognized her phone in the picture. She made a short table for each city: rent, distance from family, and whether she knew a single person there. Three cities dropped out in ten minutes. She planned weekend visits to the other two before signing anything.

Questions to ask yourself after drawing Seven of Cups

  • Which option are you drawn to that's still under a veil, something you haven't actually checked?
  • Is there one cup you keep skipping, and is that because it scares you or because it bores you?
  • What could you do on the ground this week so this choice stops floating in the clouds?

Seven of Cups as a yes or no

Maybe With too many choices the answer is blurred, so pick one first and then ask again.

Easy to confuse with The Moon

The Moon is night: a dog and a wolf bay, a crayfish climbs out of the water, and the unease comes from not seeing clearly. The Seven of Cups is bright, and everything is visible. The trouble is too much on view, with the choosing left to the viewer. Missing information calls for checking. Too many wants call for letting some go.

A common misreading of Seven of Cups

Some read the Seven as a happy card about dreams and imagination. Imagination matters, but these cups hold a snake, a dragon and a veiled shape next to the jewels and the wreath. It's a caution that wishes and fears are floating together.

Symbols in Seven of Cups

Seven cups on the clouds hold a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath, a snake, a dragon, a veiled figure, and a face. The viewer, seen from behind, has not yet sorted which of these visions is real.
