Two of Pentacles
The Two of Pentacles keeps several things in motion while staying balanced on one foot. Stay flexible, and keep adjusting your priorities as the waves of daily life rise and fall.
Too much on your plate may tip you off balance, or your money management may start to wobble.
The card's advice: Decide the order of today's tasks before you begin.
Two of Pentacles: reading the picture
Waves smash against dark rocks at the bottom of the frame, and a young dancer in a blue and red hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) moves right on top of them, one knee raised high. Both arms are lifted, a gold coin on each hand, and a long red ribbon loops around the pair in a sideways figure eight. The face is turned up, smiling. Behind, wooden sailing ships rise and dip on a rough sea. Nobody here is waiting for calm water. The ribbon never breaks, so when one coin goes up the other comes down: two tasks linked in a single rhythm, kept in balance on uneven stone.
Two of Pentacles in love, work and money
- Love and relationships
You are busy dividing time between work and love, or between friends and a partner. Rather than trying to handle both perfectly, decide together what comes first this week.
- Work and study
This season calls for juggling several tasks at once. Set the order of your deadlines and adjust as things change, and you can manage even when the waves run high.
- Money
Lining up the dates of money coming in and going out may take some attention. Writing your payment due dates and payday on one page makes the flow much easier to handle.
Two part-time jobs, one paper calendar
A 27-year-old works the front desk at a dental office until two, then waits tables until close. When the restaurant asked her to cover three extra weekend shifts in the same week her office was switching scheduling software, she drew the Two of Pentacles. The ribbon ties both coins into one loop, so the card doesn't ask her to drop either job. It asks for rhythm. She took two of the shifts, turned down the third, and put both schedules on one paper calendar on her fridge.
Questions to ask yourself after drawing Two of Pentacles
- When I lift one of my two commitments, how low can the other one drop before it hits the rocks?
- What have I been postponing until the water calms down that I could handle in the middle of the chop?
- Am I keeping this balance with a light step or with clenched teeth?
Two of Pentacles as a yes or no
Maybe The situation keeps changing, so set your priorities first and then look at the question again.
Easy to confuse with Temperance
Both show someone working between two things. The Temperance angel pours water slowly from one cup into the other until they blend; patience and the right mix are the point. The Two of Pentacles never blends anything. The coins stay separate, and the skill is quick, steady handling. Healing and moderation belong to Temperance; a busy week of bills and shifts belongs to the Two.
A common misreading of Two of Pentacles
The figure-eight ribbon gets read as 'infinite money' or endless luck. In the picture, the ribbon simply connects the two coins. What keeps going is the back-and-forth motion, not wealth, and the balance stops the moment the hands do.
Symbols in Two of Pentacles
A figure lightly juggles two coins joined by a ribbon shaped like a sideways figure eight, almost dancing. The endless loop shows a cycle that keeps turning, while the rolling waves and ships behind show balance amid ups and downs.
How we drew Two of Pentacles
- Kept from the 1909 card
the figure handling two coins linked by a sideways figure-eight ribbon, the waves and ships behind
- What we changed
The figure wears hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), and the ships are traditional sailboats.
