Four of Wands
A stage is complete, and this card celebrates it with open joy. Good things come to home, family and gatherings, so make room for festivity and togetherness.
Minor friction or a lack of preparation might push a celebration back a little further than you hoped.
The card's advice: Share your joy with the people who stood by you.
Four of Wands: reading the picture
Four planted wands hold up garlands of white and red flowers, with red ribbons hanging loose. Under this flowered frame, two people come dancing out. One wears a dark blue dopo, a long outer robe, and a headband; the other, crowned with flowers, swings the skirt of a red-and-white hanbok, traditional Korean dress. Both lift bouquets, and both are laughing. A castle sits on the hill behind, yet the party happens outside its walls, where anyone passing can share it. Now look up: there's no roof. The frame stands, but the building isn't finished. This is the joy of raising the beams, a milestone rather than an ending.
Four of Wands in love, work and money
- Love and relationships
The relationship settles, and a warm current brings reasons to celebrate together. It's a good time to take a step forward, like meeting each other's families or talking about living together.
- Work and study
You may finish a project or hit a goal and share the happiness with coworkers. Before rushing on to the next task, look back on the effort you made together, and the team grows stronger.
- Money
Life feels steadier, and your heart turns toward spending on your home or family. Enjoy celebrations freely, but stay within a budget you set in advance so the happiness has no aftertaste.
The housewarming before the roof is fixed
A couple in their late thirties closed on their first house after twelve years of renting. The inspection flagged a roof that will need replacing within a year, and one of them wanted to skip the housewarming until that was done. The other drew the Four of Wands. The garland in the picture hangs over posts with nothing on top, and nobody in the card is waiting for shingles. The reading favors a simple potluck now, a real thank-you to the friends who helped them move, and treating the roof as the next project rather than a reason to postpone.
Questions to ask yourself after drawing Four of Wands
- What in your life has its four posts standing, even if the roof isn't on yet?
- Are you celebrating this alone inside the castle walls, or is there someone you'd invite out under the garland?
- How would you like to mark this point before the next round of work begins?
Four of Wands as a yes or no
Yes A card of celebration and stability, it suggests what you hoped for is likely to wrap up happily.
Easy to confuse with Three of Cups
Both cards throw a party. In the Three of Cups, three friends raise their cups in a circle, and being together is the reason. In the Four of Wands, the flowered gate marks something built: a move, a wedding, a graduation, an opening. If a finished stage sits behind the joy, it's the Four. If the joy is simply good company, it's the Three.
A common misreading of Four of Wands
It often gets memorized as the wedding card. Weddings do come up, but what the Four celebrates is a foundation built together. It appears just as readily for a move, a business opening, a long project wrapping up, or a family reunion. Outside a love question, there's no need to stretch it into marriage.
Symbols in Four of Wands
