Three of Wands

#Expansion#Waiting#Distant horizons
Upright

What you prepared is beginning to reach outward, and your efforts are spreading beyond familiar ground. Good news may arrive from far away, so keep watching the horizon.

Reversed

Expected results may run late, which can feel frustrating when you've already done your part.

The card's advice: Widen your view and look for openings.

Three of Wands: reading the picture

Counting the sails comes before noticing the person. The figure stands on a rocky cliff among twisted pines, turned fully away from us, robe and red sash lifting in the wind. Below, sailboats with ribbed sails are scattered between island peaks, some already tiny near the horizon, some still close with their sails full. Two wands stand behind the figure's left shoulder and a third at the right edge. Nobody leans on them, and no hand waves at the ships. The cargo has been sent. What's left is wind and tide, which nobody on shore controls. Waiting from high ground isn't the same as waiting idle: from up here, you spot the returning sail first.

Three of Wands in love, work and money

  • Love and relationships

The relationship gradually broadens, and you start imagining the future together. A connection with someone far away, or a message from them, could turn into welcome news.

  • Work and study

Work you've prepared starts to expand outward, making this a good time for collaboration with other regions. Results may take a while, so ready the next step in the meantime.

  • Money

Seeds of effort are slowly starting to pay back, though the full harvest may take time. Instead of spending money before it arrives, make plans once it's actually in hand.

When it comes up

Sample boxes sent to four gift shops

Four sample boxes of walnut cutting boards went out to gift shops in three states, packed by a 44-year-old woodworker who until now had only sold online. Since then he's refreshed his inbox about twenty times a day. Asking whether any of it would land, he got the Three of Wands. Like the figure on the cliff, his ships have already sailed, and refreshing won't change the wind. The card turns his attention to work he can do in the meantime: photographing the next batch, counting his lumber, and drafting a list of shops for round two.

Questions to ask yourself after drawing Three of Wands

  • Which ships have you already sent out, and what next step have you postponed while watching for them?
  • Seen from a little higher up, does the reach of your work look wider or narrower than you assumed?
  • Which three stakes have you driven into solid ground, so that a late reply can't knock you over?

Three of Wands as a yes or no

Yes Your preparations are reaching outward, so with a little patience, good news is quite likely.

Easy to confuse with Two of Wands

Both show a figure looking out to sea, so people mix up their order. The Two holds a globe on a castle wall, still deciding whether and where to go. The Three holds nothing and watches ships already under way. If your question is 'should I start?', the Two fits. If it's 'how will what I sent out turn out?', look to the Three.

A common misreading of Three of Wands

Some readers see the waiting in this card and hear 'no.' Slow and failed are different words. The ships in the picture are still afloat. Before deciding something hasn't worked, the card suggests checking how far it has actually traveled.

Symbols in Three of Wands

The figure seen from behind watches over ventures already sent out and waits for results. The three wands planted firmly in the ground are the foundation you've built, and the ships at sea are opportunities and news that will sail back from afar.
