Judgement

#Calling#Reflection#Rising again
Upright

Judgement asks you to look honestly back on the past and rise renewed. A chance to try again is on its way, and this time you bring hard-won wisdom with you.

Reversed

You may be too hard on yourself, replaying old mistakes, or you may keep putting off a decision.

The card's advice: Recall one lesson your past experience taught you.

Judgement: reading the picture

Stone boxes stand in rows, and people are climbing out of them with both arms raised. A shirtless young man on the left, a long-haired woman with her back to us, a white-bearded old man on the right, more behind: different ages, all reaching the same way. Follow their hands up to an angel in hanbok, Korean traditional dress, blowing a gold trumpet above the clouds. Its red banner carries a round flower emblem where older decks put a cross. Nobody is hauling these people out. They hear the call and rise on their own. Beyond them a lake and mountains wait, and white lilies bloom along the front.

Judgement in love, work and money

  • Love and relationships

You might reflect on and settle a past relationship, or find a reason to reconnect with someone who drifted away. Instead of being tied to old mistakes, carry what you learned and approach things anew.

  • Work and study

A goal you once set aside, or a second chance, comes back around. Sum up your experience so far, and you'll hear a clear answer about where to go next.

  • Money

It's a good time to calmly review past spending and set new money habits. Checking for forgotten accounts or money owed back to you also helps tidy things up.

When it comes up

Eleven credits short of a degree

A 44-year-old warehouse supervisor left college at 20, eleven credits short of a bachelor's, and had stopped mentioning it years ago. Then his old school emailed alumni about a degree-completion program, and he left the message unopened for a week. When he finally drew a card, it was Judgement. He noticed the white-bearded man climbing out of his box right beside the young ones, with nobody checking ages. He called the registrar to learn which of his old credits still counted, then signed up for one evening class to see how it felt.

Questions to ask yourself after drawing Judgement

  • What old plan of yours would you be secretly relieved to hear is still possible?
  • Which mistake from your past are you still treating like a verdict instead of a lesson?
  • When you get up again, how much depends on someone else, and how much only needs you to move?

Judgement as a yes or no

Yes This card brings a chance to rise again, so if you use what you've learned, the answer is positive.

Easy to confuse with Justice

The names cause this mix-up: "Judgement" sounds like a courtroom ruling. Justice weighs right and wrong with scales and a sword and settles what you've earned. Judgement shows people rising at a trumpet call, closer to waking up than to a verdict. A fair settlement points to Justice; shaking off the past and starting over points to Judgement.

A common misreading of Judgement

The word leads many people to expect punishment, or a bill coming due for old mistakes. The people in the picture aren't being sentenced; they're answering a call with open arms. Traditionally this card is about looking back, letting go and rising again. Being too hard on yourself is the reversed meaning.

Symbols in Judgement

The angel blowing a trumpet above the clouds is a call that wakes a sleeping heart, and the banner hanging from the trumpet stands for a fresh resolve. The people rising from coffins with open arms are shedding the past and being reborn, and the mountains behind are the next goals still to climb.

How we drew Judgement

  • Kept from the 1909 card

the angel blowing a trumpet above the clouds, the banner on the trumpet, people rising from coffins with arms open, the mountains behind

  • What we changed

A round emblem replaces the red cross on the banner, and the people wear hanbok.
