The Empress

#Abundance#Nurturing#Harvest
Upright

Here is a card of things growing generously and ripening into fruit. Love, care and creative work all flourish under its influence, filling your days with a sense of plenty.

Reversed

Too much worry or overprotecting others can wear you out, or you may forget to look after yourself.

The card's advice: Feed yourself well and let yourself rest first.

The Empress: reading the picture

She isn't sitting upright. The Empress leans back on a flowered cushion at the edge of a pine forest, gaze lowered, at ease, more like someone enjoying a garden than running a country. A red overcoat falls open over a cream dress covered in golden flowers. She holds a gold scepter loosely, and twelve stars ring her head. To the left, wheat stands waist-high, heads bent with grain; white flowers bloom at her feet; to the right, a stream tumbles over rocks. Move your eyes left to right and the field's harvest and the running water meet in her. That relaxed grip says it: nothing here needs forcing.

The Empress in love, work and money

  • Love and relationships

Kind words and small acts of care flow both ways, and the relationship grows warmer. As much as you look after your partner, remember you deserve love too, so let yourself lean on them.

  • Work and study

Projects you've poured care into begin to bear fruit, and hands-on or decorative creative work gets an extra boost. Tend your efforts like seedlings rather than rushing results, and the rewards grow larger.

  • Money

Resources feel more plentiful, but cheerful spending can slip out faster than you think. Try separating healthy spending that truly nourishes you from purchases made just for a mood lift.

When it comes up

The nightly drive to Mom's assisted living

For eight months, a 44-year-old daughter had driven to her mother's assisted living facility every evening after work, bringing soup, doing laundry, sorting mail. Her own dinner was a granola bar in the parking lot. She drew The Empress expecting a pat on the back for all that caregiving. Then she looked again: the woman in the picture isn't feeding anyone. She's resting. That week she asked her brother to cover Tuesdays and Thursdays, and she spent the first free evening cooking a real meal for one.

Questions to ask yourself after drawing The Empress

  • If you listed everything you're watering right now, where would your own name land on that list?
  • Is there wheat already bent with grain that you haven't harvested because you keep saying it isn't ready?
  • Where could you loosen your grip, the way she holds her scepter, and let something grow on its own schedule?

The Empress as a yes or no

Yes As a card of abundance and harvest, it suggests good news for anything you've been tending with care.

Easy to confuse with Queen of Pentacles

Both are women seated among flowers. The Queen of Pentacles looks down at the coin in her lap, a rabbit at her feet; her care is practical, measured in budgets and meals. The Empress is bigger and looser, abundance as a season rather than a task list. If it feels like a to-do list, think Queen. If it feels like summer, think Empress.

A common misreading of The Empress

'Does this mean I'm pregnant?' comes up often when the Empress appears. In the tradition, the Empress covers anything growing and ripening: work, a creative project, a relationship, as well as family. A card can't answer a question about your body; that belongs to a test or a doctor.

Symbols in The Empress

Her crown of twelve stars reflects the cycle of the twelve months and the order of nature, and the ripe wheat at her feet is a harvest earned through effort. The stream running through the woods shows life force that never runs dry and a richly full heart.
